Synthesis: prioritising the right things

This stage is important to get right as it defines the problems which needs to be fixed. I will often have to work with product teams and stakeholders to agree these priorities. This stage highlights the business opportunities and the customer value. The definition stage sets the scope for the Minimum Viable Product.

Outputs include:
  • Personas and empathy maps
  • Journey maps
  • Service design blueprints
  • Research findings presentation
  • Collaborative workshops (for example, dot voting)

It's not design if you've not tested it! Accessibility and usability are the primary factors I consider at this point. Without testing with users, this phase is only based on assumptions.

  • Co-design workshops
  • Information architecture
  • Lo/Hi fidelity wireframes
  • Redesigns and design reviews
  • Best practice guidelines ( style guide for example)
  • Interactive prototyping

Entering into the continuous delivery cycle

  • Handover with designers, partners and development
  • UAT scripts and tests for multiple devices
  • Styleguides and design systems
  • Design documentation and asset management
  • HTML5 mockups (LESS, Git, Bootstrap)
  • CMS knowledge: Drupal, Wordpress & MODx
  • Custom hand-coded email template

Future planning:
  • Validation: usability testing
  • Benchmarking & tracking performance
  • Presenting and creating strategies to clients for on-going improvement
